This Wednesday at 9:00 p.m., “A Local Touch – Music with A Virginia Connection” brings an evening of captivating performances highlighting Virginia’s rich musical landscape. Hosted by Raymond Jones, the program features a diverse selection of works with ties to the Old Dominion and beyond.
We’ll begin with “Misty Mountains,” a mesmerizing piece by Hampton Roads composer Melvin Lauf, Jr., performed by the talented Williamsburg-based flute ensemble Flute Frenzy. Their mastery and delicacy bring Lauf’s evocative work to life.
Next, the Old Dominion University Winds, under the direction of Dennis Zeisler, present Alfred Reed’s arrangement of the beloved traditional tune “Greensleeves,” offering a fresh take on this timeless melody.
Taking to the skies, Navy pilot and pianist Alex Beyer joins the Virginia Symphony under Eric Jacobsen for an electrifying interpretation of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor, a dramatic and expressive masterpiece
We’ll then cross the Potomac to hear the Washington Master Chorale, conducted by Donald McCullough, from their album "Melodious Accord," delivering choral elegance and depth with impeccable artistry. This recording documents an extraordinary concert, intended to capture the spirit of shape note conventions, which are still held today in many parts of the country.
Virginia native Mason Bates’ ethereal work “Sirens” is next, performed by Capella San Francisco, blending contemporary textures with ancient inspirations in a spellbinding vocal journey.
Finally, we welcome the renowned Takács Quartet, recent visitors to the Virginia Arts Festival, as they present a masterful rendition of Haydn’s String Quartet in E-flat, Op. 76, No. 6, a work brimming with sophistication and charm.
