‘A Local Touch:’ Cozy Winter Melodies with a Virginia Connection

Jill Wellington

As snowflakes fall and temperatures drop, settle in for a heartwarming evening of music this Wednesday at 9:00 p.m. on WHRO-FM. Grab a blanket, a steaming cup of your favorite drink, and join Raymond Jones for “A Local Touch: Music with a Virginia Connection,” as we explore enchanting winter-inspired works and celebrate the rich musical ties to our region.

BHM local touch

This week, we’ll begin with a taste of the score for local actor/producer Robert Shepherd’s new film, “That Summer the Wolf Came,” premiering January 18 at The American Theatre in Phoebus, Hampton.

Next, we journey to Lexington for a stirring performance of Howard Hanson’s Symphony No. 2 “The Romantic” by the Washington & Lee Shenandoah Symphony, conducted by Barry Kolman.

Embracing the winter theme, we’ll hear Thea Musgrave’s “Songs for a Winter Evening,” beautifully rendered by soprano Lisa Milnes and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Osmo Vänskä.

Virginia’s own Thomas Pandolfi graces us with his performance of Paderewski’s Piano Concerto, recorded at St. Luke Catholic Church in McLean, under the baton of Peter Schmelzer.

From Williamsburg, we’ll revel in the 2019 recording of Dan Forrest’s “Lux: The Dawn From On High,” performed by the Williamsburg Choral Guild and the Virginia Wesleyan University Camerata, conducted by Brian J. Isaac.

Finally, Daniel W. Boothe leads Symphonicity in Tchaikovsky’s lush “Serenade for Strings,” captured in a live recording from October 2021.

Let the music warm your soul and transport you this wintery Wednesday evening. Tune in to WHRO-FM at 90.3 on your radio or listen online, for an hour of beautiful melodies and local pride with “A Local Touch.”
