Virginia’s Holiday Sounds, This Wednesday, on ‘A Local Touch’

Laura James

This Wednesday, December 11, at 9:00 p.m., “A Local Touch – Music with A Virginia Connection” offers a heartwarming celebration of the season, blending timeless classics with performances rooted in Virginia’s vibrant musical tradition. From Handel’s beloved "Messiah" to modern choral works, this week’s program captures the spirit of the holidays with grace and joy, all while highlighting the exceptional talent of our local musicians and ensembles.

BHM local touch

This week’s centerpiece is Handel’s oratorio "Messiah," performed by the Virginia Symphony Orchestra and Chorus under Christopher Allen’s direction. With stellar soloists Zoe Allen, Sun-Ly Pierce, Alek Shrader, and Levi Hernandez, this recording from last year captures the grandeur and emotion of the masterpiece. Want to hear it live? The Virginia Symphony will perform Messiah from December 19 to 21 in Virginia Beach, Newport News, and Norfolk. Visit their website for tickets and details.

Next, we head to northern Virginia for Bob Chilcott’s “Wenceslas,” performed by Choralis under Gretchen Kuhrmann. This modern holiday gem blends storytelling and song, bringing the spirit of St. Wenceslas to life.

The Virginia Wesleyan University Chorale, directed by Bryson Mortensen, adds to the festive cheer with selections from their concert “Sing We Now at Christmas.”

Finally, the program concludes with the Air Combat Command Heritage of America Band from Langley Air Force Base performing Norman Dello Joio’s “Variants on a Medieval Tune (In dulci jubilo),” a brilliant interpretation of the classic carol.
