Touchdowns, Turkeys, and Harmonies, this Wednesday, on ‘A Local Touch’

The Virginia Chorale
The Virginia Chorale

As the Hokies and the Hoos gear up for their big showdown this weekend, “A Local Touch: Music with A Virginia Connection” sets the stage with a spirited program this Wednesday at 9:00 p.m. on WHRO-FM. Host Raymond Jones brings you music from the University of Virginia Cavalier Marching Band and the Virginia Tech "Highty Tighty" Marching Band, offering a harmonious nod to the gridiron rivalry. Expect classic tunes like “Glory to Virginia” and “The Cavalier Song.”

BHM local touch

The evening also embraces the Thanksgiving spirit with selections from the Williamsburg Choral Guild’s 2007 concert “Sing We Thanks,” conducted by Jay BeVille. Adding a historical touch, The Virginia Company brings music from their album “Vintage Virginia,” capturing the charm of the Old Dominion.

The program continues with The Virginia Chorale, under Charles Woodward, performing Gregory Spears’ evocative piece The Neighboring Village. A few months ago, Raymond Jones had the opportunity to discuss this piece with Spears in an insightful interview. You can listen to the full conversation here.

In anticipation of Notre Dame Cathedral's reopening, organist Stephen Z. Cook delivers a breathtaking recital recorded at the iconic Paris landmark in 2017.

Celebrate Virginia’s rich musical heritage and the spirit of Thanksgiving this Wednesday at 9:00 p.m. on WHRO-FM 90.3, or listen online. From marching bands to choral ensembles, it’s a lineup that showcases the diversity and talent of the Commonwealth. And as we gear up for the big game between the Hokies and the Hoos, let the music set the stage for a week filled with touchdowns and turkey!
