Best of Pickin: Yonder Mountain String Band

On this week’s Best of Pickin, we’ll hear music from the Yonder Mountain String Band, Del McCoury, The Holler Choir, and Ricky Skaggs. Skaggs is scheduled to come to the Ferguson Center on December 11th for his annual Holiday Show. The Holler Choir is based in Asheville, North Carolina, and recently performed with the Steep Canyon Rangers in a series of benefit concerts to help in recovery efforts there due to Hurricane Helene. Also, music from the Chicago based Special Consensus Band and their tribute to John Denver. And, music from the Dead South, Amy Helm, and Rhonda Vincent doing a killer cover of the Dolly Parton classic “Jolene.” Stay up late and check out both traditional and progressive Bluegrass on the Best of Pickin. Friday night at 11 on 89.5.

Barry Graham used to arrive at WHRO with a briefcase full of papers and lesson plans. For 32 years he taught US and Virginia Government in the Virginia Beach Public Schools. While teaching was always his first love, radio was a close second. While attending Old Dominion, Barry was program director at WODU, the college radio station. After graduating, he came to WHRO as an overnight announcer. Originally intending to stay on only while completing graduate school, he was soon hooked on Public Radio and today is the senior announcer on WHRV. In 2001, Barry earned his Ph.D in Urban Studies by writing a history of WHRO and analyzing its impact upon local education, policy and cultural arts organizations.
