Tune in to WHRO-FM this Saturday at 8:00 p.m. for three hours of new classical releases on “This Just In,” hosted by Raymond Jones.

This week, we continue our exploration of Ferdinand Thieriot’s Piano Quartets with a look at his Piano Quartet No. 4. This piece is a brilliant example of how chamber music can strike a balance between intimacy and grandeur. This late Romantic work, though not part of the standard chamber music repertoire, has been rediscovered in recent years through modern recordings and performances by musicians such as the Amadeus Chamber Musicians, who are dedicated to reviving lesser-known gems.

We’ll also feature a selection from the recently released album “Abbey Road Concerto” by Alpha Classics, which celebrates British composer Frederick Delius. Delius’s Violin Concerto is a beautiful piece for those who appreciate music that evokes landscapes and emotions rather than technical displays. The recent recording by Guy Braunstein, conducted by Alondra de la Parra, offers a fresh perspective on this unique work, focusing on its lyrical depth and atmospheric quality.

For symphony lovers, we’ll dive into Anton Bruckner's Symphony No. 9, often referred to as the "Incomplete Ninth." This monumental work is famous for its deep emotional resonance and grand scale. Although the final movement was left unfinished, the three completed movements—an imposing first movement, a lively scherzo, and a slow, elegiac adagio—are a testament to Bruckner’s mastery. The Bruckner Orchestra Linz, conducted by Markus Poschner, brings this unfinished masterpiece to life, emphasizing its emotional depth and grandeur.

Next, we’ll enjoy Gustav Holst’s “Four Part-Songs,” a choral work that blends English folk influences with refined harmonies. The BBC’s 2024 rendition showcases Holst’s unique ability to merge traditional English choral music with broader classical influences, offering a fresh interpretation of this delightful work.

We’ll wrap up the evening with JoAnn Falletta conducting the Buffalo Philharmonic in “Point of Tranquility” by American composer Kenneth Fuchs. This serene and atmospheric work provides a peaceful conclusion to a night filled with musical treasures.

Don't miss this exciting journey through the latest classical music releases, Saturday at 8:00 p.m. on WHRO-FM. Tune in online or on the air for “This Just In.”
