Best of Pickin: Last Leaf on the Tree- new release from Willie Nelson

On this week’s Best of Pickin, we’ll hear from the new Willie Nelson release “ Last leaf on The Tree” which features covers from artists Beck, the Flaming Lips, Neil Young, Tom waits and plenty of others. It’s his 153 album. Also, music from the Infamous Stringdusters and their 2016 Ladies and Gentlemen release. The next year, their Gravity album, would win a Grammy. Also, music from Jaelee Roberts, the frontwoman for the all-female Americana Band Sister Sadie. We’ll also hear from the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and their Dirt Does Dylan Album. They recently announced that they were retiring from the road and touring but would continue recording. It’s two solid hours of traditional and progressive bluegrass music- just perfect for a late night kick off to the weekend. Join us. Friday night at 11 on WHRV.

Barry Graham used to arrive at WHRO with a briefcase full of papers and lesson plans. For 32 years he taught US and Virginia Government in the Virginia Beach Public Schools. While teaching was always his first love, radio was a close second. While attending Old Dominion, Barry was program director at WODU, the college radio station. After graduating, he came to WHRO as an overnight announcer. Originally intending to stay on only while completing graduate school, he was soon hooked on Public Radio and today is the senior announcer on WHRV. In 2001, Barry earned his Ph.D in Urban Studies by writing a history of WHRO and analyzing its impact upon local education, policy and cultural arts organizations.
