This Wednesday at 9 p.m., join Raymond Jones on WHRO-FM for “A Local Touch: Music with a Virginia Connection,” as we celebrate John Philip Sousa’s birthday with a lineup rich in regional ties and musical heritage.

The evening begins with Ira Hearshen’s Symphony on Themes of Sousa, performed by the Air Force Heritage of America Band from Langley Air Force Base under the baton of Col. Lowell Graham. This symphonic tribute reimagines Sousa’s iconic marches, blending patriotism and artistry in a spirited salute to “The March King.” The celebration will continue with a Sousa Medley arranged specifically for the Virginia International Tattoo, adding another layer of grandeur to the night’s program.

From patriotic fanfare, the journey continues up to Staunton for “Heifetz on the Air” with a segment titled “Fridays at the Gallery,” featuring solo and chamber works in an intimate and inspiring setting.

After that, we’ll cross the Atlantic for Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in D, featuring violinist Chin Kim with the Symphony Orchestra of Russia, conducted by Richmond’s own Paul Freeman.

And rounding out the program is a performance by the William & Mary Symphony, led by Professor David Grandis, of Max d’Ollone’s evocative piece “The Abandoned Temple,” a work that transports listeners to a realm of mystery and beauty.

Celebrate Sousa’s legacy and explore musical connections from Virginia to Russia this Wednesday at 9 p.m. on “A Local Touch” with Raymond Jones on WHRO 90.3 or online.
