An Evening of New Classics with Raymond Jones on WHRO-FM’s ‘This Just In’

Join WHRO-FM this Saturday at 8:00 p.m. for a special edition of “This Just In,” hosted by Raymond Jones. This week’s program offers a thoughtful blend of new classical releases, weaving together themes of love, heroism, and remembrance.

The evening opens with a unique nod to the iconic sounds of The Beatles with Guy Braunstein’s “Abbey Road Concerto” for violin and orchestra, with the composer himself as the soloist. This inventive piece bridges classical and pop, celebrating the timeless spirit of one of music’s most influential bands, The Beatles.

The Emerson String Quartet then takes the stage with Janáček’s String Quartet No. 1, known as The Kreutzer Sonata. Inspired by Tolstoy’s novella on love, jealousy, and tragedy, Janáček’s passionate quartet brings the novel’s emotional complexity to life.

Next, the acclaimed ensemble Voces 8 performs Taylor Scott Davis’s “To Sing of Love: A Triptych,” a contemplative work that explores the transformative power of love in its many forms, beautifully captured through Davis’s harmonious composition.

The program continues with Schubert’s Octet in F, performed by the Berlin Philharmonic Octet. The instrumentation of this Octet includes a clarinet, bassoon, horn, two violins, viola, cello, and double bass, a combination that gives the work both the intimacy of chamber music and a symphonic depth.

In a fitting tribute to remarkable women across literature and legend, French composer Mel Bonis’s “Women of Legend” presents piano portraits of seven iconic women, from Ophelia to Salome. These musical character studies capture the essence of their stories with finesse, exploring themes of strength, passion, and mystery.

Tune in to “This Just In” this Saturday at 8:00 p.m. on WHRO-FM, and let Raymond Jones guide you through the latest classical releases. And remember, you can listen to WHRO FM from anywhere through the Media Player.
