Sunday Night Bluegrass with Pickin- Classic first-generation stars, plus new artists who are keeping

Tune in Sunday night for two hours of traditional bluegrass with music from Blue Highway, The Kenny and Amanda Smith Band, Don Reno and Red Smiley, Del McCoury, and plenty of others. We’ll have a unique set of both classic and new generation artists including The Lilly Brothers teaming with long time sideman Don Stover. The duo left West Virginia for Boston in the early 50s and are credited with bringing bluegrass to New England and influencing artists such as Bill Keith and Peter Rowan. Also, music from The Kody Norris Show, who are a new band performing with a traditional sound, and the Chicago based Special Consensus Band who just released the cd Great Blue North where they took singer-songwriters from Canada and performed their music with a bluegrass tilt. It’s two hours of great sounding artists on Pickin. Sunday night at 7 on 89.5

Barry Graham used to arrive at WHRO with a briefcase full of papers and lesson plans. For 32 years he taught US and Virginia Government in the Virginia Beach Public Schools. While teaching was always his first love, radio was a close second. While attending Old Dominion, Barry was program director at WODU, the college radio station. After graduating, he came to WHRO as an overnight announcer. Originally intending to stay on only while completing graduate school, he was soon hooked on Public Radio and today is the senior announcer on WHRV. In 2001, Barry earned his Ph.D in Urban Studies by writing a history of WHRO and analyzing its impact upon local education, policy and cultural arts organizations.
