Tune in this Saturday at 8:00 p.m. for “This Just In” on WHRO-FM, where host Raymond Jones presents an exciting lineup of fresh classical music releases. This week’s program offers three hours of stunning performances, spanning centuries of classical composition, including some rarely-heard gems.
The evening begins with a dive into French Baroque with harpsichord music from François Couperin’s Ninth Order from his “Pièces de Clavecin.” This recently released album honors the illustrious Couperin Dynasty, a family that played a pivotal role in shaping Baroque music in France, and encapsulates the refinement and elegance of French Baroque music.
Next on the program, Raymond Jones brings another mesmerizing performance by the world-renowned Emerson String Quartet, this time in collaboration with legendary keyboardist Leon Fleisher. They’ll perform Brahms’ Piano Quintet in F minor, Op. 34.
Following this, we journey to the heart of Czech nationalism with a stirring excerpt from Bedřich Smetana’s “Má vlast (My Fatherland),” performed by the Czech Philharmonic under the direction of Semyon Bychkov. This new recording, released in March 2024, marks both the bicentenary of Smetana’s birth and the start of 2024’s Year of Czech Music.
The evening concludes with a special treat—the Flute Sonata by American composer Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson, performed by flutist Adam Eccleston and pianist Monica Ohuchi. This is the first professional recording of this vibrant work, offering listeners a rare opportunity to experience Perkinson’s unique blend of classical and jazz influences.
Don’t miss this diverse and engaging selection of new classical recordings this Saturday at 8:00 p.m. on “This Just In” with Raymond Jones, on WHRO FM 90.3 or online.
