Calling all opera lovers! This Saturday at 1:00 p.m., tune in to WHRO FM 90.3 for an unforgettable journey to ancient Rome with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “La Clemenza di Tito,” broadcast as part of the WFMT Opera Series.

Mozart’s final work in the “opera seria” genre tells a timeless story of mercy, betrayal, and redemption, centered on the Roman Emperor Tito. His reign is threatened by a plot fueled by Vitellia, the daughter of a deposed emperor, who seeks revenge for being passed over as his bride. She manipulates Sesto, a close friend of Tito and someone who harbors deep love for her, into plotting an assassination. Torn between love and loyalty, Sesto succumbs to Vitellia’s demands, setting the stage for a heart-wrenching act of betrayal.

The opera features one of Mozart’s most exquisite arias, "Parto, parto, ma tu ben mio," sung by Sesto as he grapples with his loyalty to Tito and his love for Vitellia. This stunning performance is brought to life by Marianna Crebassa, whose vocal agility and emotional depth bring a new layer to the role of Sesto. Paired with Karine Deshayes as the scheming Vitellia, the two deliver a powerful dynamic, while Pene Pati brings grace and dignity to the role of Emperor Tito.

Set against the backdrop of political intrigue and personal conflict, “La Clemenza di Tito” is a testament to the power of forgiveness. In a dramatic twist, after Vitellia’s guilt is revealed, Tito, rather than seeking revenge, chooses to forgive all parties involved, showcasing a ruler who embodies mercy over vengeance.

With a score that brilliantly reflects the emotional intensity of the characters, from the triumphant overture to the soul-stirring conclusion, this opera is a must-listen for fans of Mozart’s profound musical storytelling.

Don’t miss this opportunity to hear one of Mozart’s most moving works, recorded live at the Aix-en-Provence Festival. Whether you are a seasoned opera aficionado or discovering “La Clemenza di Tito” for the first time, this performance promises to be an extraordinary experience. Tune in to WHRO FM 90.3 this Saturday at 1:00 p.m. or listen online.
