Join Raymond Jones this Wednesday evening on A Local Touch: Music with a Virginia Connection for a celebration of Symphonicity, Virginia Beach’s very own symphony orchestra.
The radio program will begin with a special interview with Daniel W. Boothe, Symphonicity’s music director for the past eight years, as he discusses the launch of their new season and the orchestra's upcoming 46th anniversary. Boothe will also share exciting details about their first international tour to the Ards & North Down Borough, Northern Ireland—one of Virginia Beach’s five sister cities—and the highly anticipated “East Meets West” concert on October 13t, featuring the Virginia Beach Chorale.
The program will highlight some of Symphonicity’s most captivating performances, including Boothe’s own ”Cherut Fanfare,” a bold musical statement against racial and ethnic injustice, commissioned by Howard Horwitz. Other featured works include Bach’s “Little Fugue" in G minor and a 2019 performance of Edward Gregson’s Tuba Concerto, with tubist James Gourlay under Boothe’s direction.
In addition, Raymond Jones will feature performances by renowned military bands, including the U.S. Air Force Band Washington D.C., led by Lt. Col. Lowell Graham. He'll be performing William Schuman’s “New England Triptych,” based on works by William Billings. You’ll also hear the U.S. Continental Army Brass Quintet perform “The Marquis of Granby” from “Colchester Fantasy” — a name familiar to locals, as he is Norfolk’s Granby Street namesake.
Rounding out the program, Heifetz on Air will present “Joy of Bach” from Staunton, Virginia, and the Richmond-based Atlantic Chamber Ensemble will perform Bohuslav Martinu’s “Nonet No. 2.”
Don’t miss this celebration of Virginia’s rich musical heritage this Wednesday at 9:00 p.m. on WHRO-FM, 90.3, or listen online at whro.org.
