This Wednesday evening at 9:00 p.m., tune in to WHRO-FM for a special edition of A Local Touch: Music with a Virginia Connection, hosted by Raymond Jones. The program, titled “The Winds of Autumn,” will spotlight symphonic bands and wind ensembles, embracing the richness of fall through powerful performances by Virginia-based musicians.
Join us as Raymond Jones speaks with Dr. Tyler Austin, the newly appointed music director of the Chesapeake Bay Wind Ensemble, about his vision for the group and the exciting future ahead. Listeners will be treated to stirring performances, including “Yosemite Autumn” by Mark Camphouse performed by USAF Heritage of America Band, and “Concert Celebration” by Claude T. Smith, performed by the Virginia Wind Symphony.
We will also celebrate the close relationship between military bands and wind instruments with performances by the U.S. Air Force Band. Under the baton of Colonel Larry Lang, we’ll hear a suite from Holst’s “The Planets.” Additionally, the U.S. Army Band (Pershing’s Own), conducted by Colonel Gary Lamb, will perform “The Virginians”, composed by Norfolk’s own trumpeter and conductor, James Hosay.
We will also have the pleasure of hearing the Tidewater Winds in this program. Under the direction of Sidney Berg, we will listen to Debussy’s lively “Fêtes” from “Nocturnes.” Additionally, with the group’s current conductor, John Brewington, we’ll enjoy the “Tidewater March,” composed by Hampton Road's Christopher Palestrant.
Whether you're a fan of classic wind repertoire or just discovering the beauty of symphonic band music, this program promises a stirring journey through the sounds of autumn. Don’t miss “The Winds of Autumn” this Wednesday at 9:00 p.m. on WHRO-FM. You can also listen online at whro.org, your home for classical music with a Virginia connection.
