Do you listen to WHRO with your pets, or leave the radio on for them when you're not home? Many of us have discovered that classical music not only soothes our souls but also brings comfort to our pets. This Thursday night, WHRO FM invites you and your furry (or feathered!) companions to join us for “Fur, Feathers, and Flutes”—a delightful prelude to Pet Pledge Friday.
This special program, airing Thursday, September 26 at 9 PM, explores the unique bond between classical music and the animal kingdom. You’ll hear heartwarming stories of composers who adored their pets and wrote music inspired by them. Whether it’s dogs, cats, or even opera-loving parrots, animals have left an indelible mark on classical music, and we’ll celebrate that connection in this fun and touching broadcast.
Our host, Jillene Khan, kicks off the evening with a nod to a magical animal from the world of film: John Williams’ "Hedwig’s Theme" from “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.” This beloved theme, named for the iconic owl, also holds special significance for Jillene, as she named her own pet after the wise and loyal creature.
The program continues with music by composers who were passionate pet owners themselves. Edward Elgar, for example, was a devoted dog lover, and he famously composed his "Enigma Variations," with Variation XI dedicated to his friend’s bulldog, Dan. Elgar’s affection for his canine companions shines through in this charming piece, which captures the spirit of a playful walk along the River Wye.
Maurice Ravel, on the other hand, was a committed cat enthusiast. With at least seven cats frolicking in his home, Ravel often found inspiration in his feline friends. In fact, his cats would often climb onto his piano while he worked, and their influence is unmistakable in his music. One such example is the playful “Duo Miaulé” from “L’Enfant et les Sortilèges,” a "meowed" duet that’s sure to resonate with any cat owner.
For a more exotic twist, Georges Bizet’s "Habanera" from “Carmen” will make a special appearance—but not just for its operatic beauty. This piece has a surprising fan: an African parrot who "sings along" to opera arias!
And for those with dogs who enjoy a good nap, Beethoven’s "Moonlight Sonata" will make an appearance as well. This serene masterpiece is known to have lulled a dog named Rosie from Arkansas into sweet slumber every time it played—proof that even our canine friends appreciate a calming melody.
Join us for a heartwarming celebration of the animals who bring joy to our lives and the music they’ve inspired. From classical music-loving cats to service dogs who move to Beethoven, and parrots with a taste for opera, “Fur, Feathers, and Flutes” is a tribute to the special bond between music and our beloved companions.
Tune in this Thursday at 9 PM on WHRO FM 90.3, or online, for "Fur, Feathers, and Flutes", and don’t forget to support us during Pet Pledge Friday. Together, we’ll keep the music—and the love for our pets—alive for years to come.
