Keeping Classical Fresh: Discover the Latest Releases on ‘This Just In’

Charles Parker

This Saturday at 8 p.m., Raymond Jones invites you to explore the latest classical music releases on WHRO FM 90.3’s This Just In. The program opens with Carlo Rizzi and the Welsh National Opera Orchestra’s Symphonic Suite from “Tosca,” celebrating Puccini’s anniversary year with new orchestral renditions that remain faithful to the composer’s original orchestrations. This collection of world-premiere recordings lets Puccini’s brilliance shine purely in instrumental form.

From there, the spotlight shifts to Max Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1, performed by violinist Rachel Barton Pine with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra under the baton of Teddy Abrams. Known for its expressive power, Bruch’s concerto remains a pinnacle of the violin repertoire, and this rendition captures both the dramatic and lyrical qualities that continue to captivate audiences.

Next, the Chineke! Orchestra, conducted by Kalena Bovell, presents Coleridge-Taylor’s “Ballade in A Minor.” This vibrant piece is characterized by dramatic contrasts, from bold, muscular themes to tender, cinematic passages, culminating in a sweeping love theme that showcases the ensemble’s dynamic range.

Continuing the evening, the SWR Symphonieorchester Stuttgart performs Bruckner’s Symphony No. 7, a work that marked a turning point for the composer and brought him long-overdue success. Known for its tonal innovation and emotional depth, Bruckner’s Seventh remains a cornerstone of the symphonic repertoire.

Adding a contemporary voice to the lineup, Rebecca Dale’s “Night Seasons” features cellist Guy Johnston, the choir Tenebrae, and the Philharmonia Orchestra conducted by Nigel Short. This evocative piece explores nocturnal themes, creating a haunting and deeply moving experience for listeners.

Rounding out the program, flutist Eugenia Moliner and pianist Beilin Han offer Alan Thomas’ “Variations on Dvorak’s Song to the Moon.” This fresh interpretation of a beloved aria from Dvorak’s opera “Rusalka” showcases the melodic interplay between flute and piano, bringing the evening to a shimmering close.
