Classic Bluegrass From Reno and Smiley on this Week's Pickin

It's classic Bluegrass on this week’s Pickin with tracks from Flatt and Scruggs, Bill Monroe, the Country Gentlemen, and Jim and Jesse.  Also, tracks from Reno and Smiley.  Don Reno and Red Smiley would form a musical partnership in 1949 and become one of the most acclaimed duos in the genre. They would first record for the Federal Record Label in 1951 and later for the famed King label in 1952. They would eventually form a back-up band known as the “Tennessee Cut Ups” and they recorded through the late 50s and into the 60s before disbanding.  They briefly reunited for a famed release in 1971 entitled “Together Again.” It is still hailed as a Bluegrass classic.  Tune in for two solid hours of traditional Bluegrass music on Pickin. Sunday night at 7 on WHRV.

Barry Graham used to arrive at WHRO with a briefcase full of papers and lesson plans. For 32 years he taught US and Virginia Government in the Virginia Beach Public Schools. While teaching was always his first love, radio was a close second. While attending Old Dominion, Barry was program director at WODU, the college radio station. After graduating, he came to WHRO as an overnight announcer. Originally intending to stay on only while completing graduate school, he was soon hooked on Public Radio and today is the senior announcer on WHRV. In 2001, Barry earned his Ph.D in Urban Studies by writing a history of WHRO and analyzing its impact upon local education, policy and cultural arts organizations.
