WHRO-FM 90.3 brings you a stunning performance of “Idomeneo”, Mozart’s first operatic masterpiece. Recorded at Hercules Hall in Munich, this performance features the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and Chorus under the baton of the legendary Sir Simon Rattle.
In 1777, Mozart expressed his desire to write another opera, a dream that came true in the fall of 1780 when he received a commission from Munich for the carnival season. The excellence of the Munich orchestra and the subject—the conflict between divine law and human passion—inspired Mozart to create one of his most elaborate and innovative stage works. Premiered in Munich in 1781, “Idomeneo” was groundbreaking for its time, especially for the importance of the chorus and the presence of many long, uninterrupted passages of music.
This work tells the story of Idomeneo of Crete who, in order to return home after the Trojan War, makes a pact with Poseidon, God of the Sea. In exchange for his protection, he will sacrifice the first living being he encounters upon setting foot on dry land. But fate deals him a bad hand, as the first person Idomeneo encounters is his own son, Idamante.
This striking performance features Andrew Staples in the demanding title role of Idomeneo, Sabine Devieilhe and Magdalena Kožená as the passionate lovers Ilia and Idamante, and Elsa Dreisig as the jealous and desperate Elettra.
Don’t miss this opportunity to experience Mozart’s first major operatic triumph. Tune in to WHRO 90.3 this Saturday at 1 PM, or stream online, and let the music of “Idomeneo” transport you to the world of ancient Greek myths and timeless human struggles.
