Amy Helm featured on this Week's Best of Pickin

Amy Helm is featured on this week's Best of Pickin. The daughter of famed drummer Levon Helm released her third album "What the Flood Leaves Behind" in 2021. She helped produce her dad's Grammy Award winning " Dirt Farmer" release in 2008. Also, music from Jaelee Roberts. She also fronts the all-female Bluegrass Band "Sister Sadie" who will be featured on the Grand Ole Opry this weekend. And tracks from Neko Case, Iris Dement, The Grass Cats, and The Farm Hands, as well as a brand-new album from perennial sideman Troy Engle. His new cd " Back Home" is a reflection of his leaving Nashville to return to Southern Pennsylvania. Tune in for two solid hours of traditional and progressive bluegrass music on the Best of Pickin. Friday night at 11 on WHRV.

Barry Graham used to arrive at WHRO with a briefcase full of papers and lesson plans. For 32 years he taught US and Virginia Government in the Virginia Beach Public Schools. While teaching was always his first love, radio was a close second. While attending Old Dominion, Barry was program director at WODU, the college radio station. After graduating, he came to WHRO as an overnight announcer. Originally intending to stay on only while completing graduate school, he was soon hooked on Public Radio and today is the senior announcer on WHRV. In 2001, Barry earned his Ph.D in Urban Studies by writing a history of WHRO and analyzing its impact upon local education, policy and cultural arts organizations.
