In 2020 the long-time punk band X released their first album in 25 years. Their new release “Smoke & Fiction” is the final studio album in their 44 year career and they're going out in a blaze of glory.
With original members John Doe, Exene Cervenka, Billy Zoom and D.J. Bonebrake the songs are ferocious and loud as they reflect on how the passage of time affects us all and the ways the past and present connects us.
The cinematic imagery rises above the blasting instruments showing off the quality that X has always been know for: blending lyrical depth with punk sensibility.
The odd, unique harmony of Doe and Cervenka is still just as fun as ever and the album goes by quickly with it’s runtime of only about a half hour. As they reach the end of their road, “Smoke and Fiction” is a cause for celebration that X ever existed at all.
