This Wednesday, July 31st, WHRO FM 90.3 invites you to immerse yourself in an evening of music deeply connected to the heart of Virginia. Join us at 9:00 PM for A Local Touch: Music with a Virginia Connection, expertly curated by our esteemed host, Raymond Jones.

The program begins with a remarkable performance from the Virginia Arts Festival, featuring the illustrious JoAnn Falletta conducting the 1922 suite “Façade – An Entertainment” by Sir William Walton, and setting the stage for an evening of diverse and exceptional music. Following this, we will be treated to the John Duffy Concerto for Tenor Sax, with Glenn Morrisette as soloist.
Our journey through Virginia's musical landscape continues in Staunton with Heifetz On Air presenting "Schubert: At the Gates of Heaven." On this episode, a complete performance of Franz Schubert’s so-called “two-cello” string quintet – the String Quintet in C. It is a piece so sublime that pianist Artur Rubinstein called the second movement “the arrival at the gates of heaven”.
Members of the Norfolk Chamber Consort, including our very own Wayla Chambo on flute, will then perform the “Concert Royal No. 4” by Couperin. This elegant piece showcases the virtuosity and artistic excellence of local musicians, further emphasizing Virginia's rich cultural heritage.
The evening concludes with a powerful rendition of Larry Bell’s Symphony No. 2, conducted by former Peninsula Symphony music director Joel Eric Suben.
