The evening will begin with the mesmerizing second part of Stephen Melillo’s “Stormworks Chapter 89 – Worlds Within the World.” For this episode, Raymond Jones has selected the Tuba Concerto, with virtuoso Daniel Ridder as soloist. This powerful composition, conducted by Melillo himself, was recorded earlier this year in Luxemburg. Listeners will be transported by the dynamic and expressive soundscapes crafted by this Virginia-based composer.

Next, we celebrate the legacy of one of the most influential figures in 20th-century classical music with “Heifetz on the Air” from Staunton, showcasing a Bernstein Celebration.

Randall Thompson’s “Ode to the Virginian Voyage” will follow. Written to celebrate the landing of the English in 1607, this piece pays homage to the state’s rich history and cultural heritage. To conclude the evening, we will be treated to Joseph Lauber’s “Four Medieval Dances,” featuring the exquisite performances of flutist Wayne Hedrick and harpist Hye Yun Chung Bennett.

Don’t miss this special edition of A Local Touch: Music with a Virginia Connection on WHRO FM 90.3. Tune in, or stream online, at 9 PM and let Raymond Jones guide you through an unforgettable evening of classical music with a unique Virginia flair.
