The Best of Pickin this week continues our look at the John Jorgenson Band who is in town this weekend. Also, a great blend of both traditional and progressive Bluegrass with music from the legendary JD Crowe, Iris Dement, The Infamous String Dusters, and a wonderful track from Wilma Lee Cooper, who was given the title of “First Lady of Bluegrass.” Women had a difficult time getting airplay and recognition in the genre as it morphed and grew into popularity. Wilma Lee Cooper had begun singing in West Virginia at an early age and after marrying Stoney Cooper, they formed a duo that had a string of hits in the late 50s and 60s. They became regulars on the Grand Ole Opry and were mainstays on the country and bluegrass circuit for years. She was one of the first female artists to get regular airplay. Tune in for a two hour listening experience of classic and new grass. It’s the best of Pickin. Friday night at 11 on WHRV.
