WHRO FM is proud to offer the opera that represents the culmination of Richard Strauss’ most productive period. This demanding opera is imbued with lush music, and tells a captivating, mystical story.
“Die Frau ohne Schatten” (The Woman Without a Shadow) follows the tale of a childless fairy empress whose desire for a “shadow” (which represents fertility, mortality, and the soul) leads her to consider stealing it from an unhappy mortal woman. However, she cannot bring herself to do so, and eventually gains her own shadow by developing kindness and understanding.
Join soprano Elza van den Heever in this thrilling performance as The Empress, Austrian tenor Andreas Schager as The Emperor, and German mezzo-soprano Tanja Ariane Baumgartner as The Nurse. Christian Thielemann conducts the Vienna State Opera Orchestra and Chorus this Saturday, June 22, at 1 p.m. Listen on WHRO FM 90.3 or stream online.
