On this week’s Pickin', we feature the music of the legendary Red Allen and his long-time sideman Frank Wakefield. Wakefield passed away April 26 at age 89. The two began a long collaboration in 1952. Wakefield also performed with Jimmy Martin, Ralph Stanley, and Don Reno. Later, he joined forces with Jerry Garcia and toured with the Grateful Dead and New Riders of the Purple Sage. However, Wakefield’s presence will always be tied to Allen and his years with the band “The Kentuckians.” The band cut many 45s in the '50s and also played Carnegie Hall. We’ll look at Allen and Wakefield on this week’s Pickin'. Sunday night at 7 on WHRV.
