Virginia Beach says a “condensed timeline” meant city departments couldn’t ensure a planned October music festival would be put on safely.
Radio station owner Audacy Virginia wanted to put on the festival on the beach, similar to April’s Something in the Water. The company had previously organized Oceanfront concerts during last year's East Coast Surfing Championships.
But the dates and location for the October festival kept shifting, only recently settling on the last weekend in October at 31st Street. No lineup was ever announced.
City council members expressed concerns about the event at an August council meeting, during which the dates and location were in flux. The council ultimately voted to give the company $750,000 to advertise Virginia Beach and the festival.
The city says it pulled the plug on the event after discussions with Audacy, but it’s leaving the door open for the organizer to try again next year.
Calls to Audacy Virginia organizers were not immediately returned Wednesday morning.
