Album of the Week: Ruston Kelly - The Weakness

Ruston Kelly’s new album “The Weakness” comes after his divorce from Kacy Musgraves whose last album dealt with the split. Though his album deals more with the resilience needed to handle all transitions in life.

Kelly’s music has been transitioning from mainstream Nashville influenced country to a more alt-rock leaning acoustic style with the help of producer and multi-instrumentalist Nate Mercereau. The two of them conjure up a neo-psychedelic haze of accompaniment to Kelly's earnest vocals.

About Musgraves, Kelley says, “I wanted whatever I said about my divorce to be something I would find honor in 20 years later, the largest sentiment I could think of was an unending love for someone while simultaneously allowing that love to fade into the background of my new life.

The album itself transitions to a more upbeat and optimistic tone as each song plays.  On “The Weakness” Ruston Kelly’s songs about his own personal life are universally relatable through his honesty, hope and strength.

Paul Shugrue has been a Virginia radio personality his entire career, working his way up from his "humble" beginnings at the Virginia Tech student station, WUVT in Blacksburg, through Charlottesville, Richmond and finally Hampton Roads. He has been married over thirty five years to his college sweetheart, a Norfolk native and they have two twenty-something boys.
