Boygenius is a trio of indie artists, Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker and “The Record” is their full length debut album. All three artists have recently enjoyed breakout success with their first few albums and this new album is a salute to the strong bonds these women have developed for each other.
This is the followup to an ep they released in 2018 and finds them going all in on forging a group identity. Their harmonies blend effortlessly and with songs about the friendship they have with each other. It’s a convincing show of unity and makes the album seem more like a full band than a one time supergroup.
The music teeters between stream-of-conciousness acoustic balladry to out-right rockers with some songs reflecting the solo artist’s contributions and others blurring the lines and melding them all into one voice.
Bridgers, Baker and Dacus have said that writing songs together has enabled them to be more earnest than with their solo material and “The Record” has some bare confessional moments.Like other supergroups of the past, boygenius leaves their listeners wanting for more long after they’ve gone back to their solo careers
