In the decades that WHRO Public Media has been broadcasting music, the station accumulated thousands of recordings. On January 21, 2023—we gave them all away.

Hundreds of people showed up to search through the thousands of CDs and LPs looking for treasures. Among the LPs were classic recordings, some very rare and valuable, especially those featuring great opera singers of the past. Music fans of all genres searched for their favorite jazz, rock, acoustic, bluegrass and classical artists. Radio hosts Paul Shugrue, Jae Sinnett, Wayla Chambo, Dwight Davis, Raymond Jones and Barry Graham were on-site to chat with fans and sign albums.

The event was born out of a need for more space for WHRO’s growing newsroom. In this digital age, music is now stored electronically, so station leadership decided the original recordings were no longer needed. What better way to get rid of them than to share them with the station’s fans!

In the coming months, the space that once held this vast music library, will become an expanded newsroom for WHRO journalists who are dedicated to covering local news.

Thank you to everyone who turned out to take home music recordings. We appreciate your ongoing support of the station, and we look forward to continuing to bring you the region's best music, local news and entertainment!
