While writing the score for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Michael Giacchino listened to the past for inspiration.

The award-winning composer of music for The Incredibles, Up, Ratatouille and Star Trek: Into Darkness  wanted to honor the talents of the man who wrote the score for the 1968 movie Planet of the Apes. Giacchino says he strove "to acknowledge the experimental musical style which my hero Jerry Goldsmith chose for the original film by finding my own interesting sounds."
