The murmuring started early. Before the first act was over, the Milanese audience, known for their exuberant operatic opinions, had become very vocal. The composer of the new opera appeared on stage following the first act, only to be greeted with catcalls. Hurt but defiant at the end of the evening, Puccini declared “It is I who am right! You shall see!” And so we have seen, and heard. The work that was booed at its premiere has become one of the most beloved operas in the world – “Madama Butterfly”. The beautiful and tragic story will be sung again this Saturday, May 24, on our Chicago Lyric Opera broadcast, beginning at 1:00 PM. Patricia Racette will heard as Cio-Cio-San, with Stefano Secco as Pinkerton.
"Madama Butterfly" Opera in three acts by Giacomo Puccini. Staatsopernchor - Wiener Philharmoniker conducted by Herbert von Karajan. Starring Mirella Freni, Plácido Domingo, Christa Ludwig, Robert Kerns and Michel Sénéchal.
