Note: We've extended the deadline for students to enter their stories into our Young Storytellers Contest. Students now have until May 8 to write and illustrate their stories.
If you are in grades K-5 and like to write, pick up those pencils! WHRO invites Kindergarten through 5th grade students to create a great story, illustrate it and enter it in our Young Storytellers Contest.
WHRO has offered the contest since 2009, and it is always a highlight of the year for WHRO Education staff. Each year, we receive between 300 to 400 entries from local children.
Stories can be fact or fiction, poetry or prose, and will be judged on originality, creative expression, storytelling and integration of illustrations.
Need some inspiration? Here are 15 writing prompts to get your creativity flowing:
Everyone in your family has a super power. Which family member has which super power and how does each one work?
You’re going on a week-long camping trip but you can only take three items. What items would you take, and why?
What would you do if you woke up one morning to find yourself invisible?
If you could travel back in time to any moment, what would it be, and why? Would you change history or just observe?
What if everyone lived in space? How would we travel from place to place? What sort of houses would we live in? What would we eat?
Write about a difficult decision you had to make.
What is the best birthday present you ever received? What made it so special?
Imagine a giant box is delivered to your front doorstep with your name on it. What’s inside and what happens when you open it?
Imagine that dogs take over the world. What do they make the humans do?
Write a story about flying to outer space and discovering a new planet.
You are walking through the forest when one of the trees starts talking to you. What does it say? What do you do?
Write a story about a kid who is moving to a new school. How do you think they might feel?
Imagine you are the captain of a pirate ship. Write a diary entry for what your day was like.
Write a sequel to one of your favorite fairy tales. For example, what was Goldilocks’s next adventure after she left the bears?
Why did the chicken cross the road? You are a detective and are assigned to the case. How do solve the mystery?
Again this year, in addition to the original contest, we will present the Batten Environmental Education Award to winning stories with an Environmental theme or topic.
Entries are judged by an independent panel of judges.
All students entering the contest will receive a special PBS KIDS Certificate. A first place and second place winner will be named in each grade level. Winners and their families will be invited to WHRO for a celebration of the WHRO Young Storytellers awards program.
The new deadline for receipt of entries is May 8, 2020 at 5:00 p.m.
