This week, Pickin' on WHRV features the music of Jim and Jesse McReynolds. They rose to fame in the 1950s after signing with Capitol Records. By the mid-1960s they were members of the Grand Ole Opry and staples on the bluegrass music festival circuit. Jesse played mandolin and Jim performed on guitar and sang tenor. They were nominated for several Grammy Awards and in 1997 were awarded a National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. Jim McReynolds died in 2002. Today, Jesse continues to perform with his backing band “The Virginia Boys” though the legacy of his work as a part of the McReynolds duo helped to shape an incredible time in bluegrass music.
