At a time when music as we know it has been threatened by the coronavirus, a comforting new album has arrived by mother/daughter duo Suzzy Roche and Lucy Wainwright Roche called, fittingly; “I Can Still Hear You.” The harmonies they create are the perfect antidote to isolation.

Suzzy is the longtime member of the trio of sisters, The Roches and Lucy is her daughter born to her and her ex-husband Loudon Wainwright III. It’s clear that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, and that type of anthropomorphization is a central theme to the album. Whimsical tales of flora and fauna deliver the message of most of the songs.

Much of the album was recorded virtually because of the pandemic with the two women collaborating with each other and special guests like members of The Indigo Girls, screen sharing their contributions and staying connected while isolating.

With Suzzy’s eloquent alto blending with Lucy’s rich soprano, they trade lines and sing in unison with a natural charm. “I Can Still Hear You” is an exercise in overcoming obstacles for the sake of good music.
