The WHRO Internship Program

The purpose of WHRO’s Internship Program is to allow qualified and interested individuals an opportunity to gain practical experience in a career setting.  These experiences can allow them to combine their educational pursuits with day-to-day operations of the communications industry.  While some internships can be used for college credit, it is not mandatory.

Individuals applying for internship must remember that the sponsoring company spends time and effort in training the interns.  The internship is a reciprocal agreement.  The interns exchange their time and effort for the opportunity of on-the-job training and work experience.

Interested applicants should be aware of the following prerequisites:

  1. An intern should be enrolled in a college or similar curriculum to which the internship applies.  (Other applicants will be considered on an individual basis.)
  2. If for credit, the applicant must provide the appropriate paperwork from their academic supervisor.
  3. Individuals interested in internships will be interviewed by the appropriate WHRO personnel to assess their qualifications.
  4. Interns will not receive any type of compensation for participation in the program.
  5. All internships will be for a minimum of fifteen weeks of fifteen hours a week unless otherwise agreed upon.
  6. All interns will have a two-week probationary period.
  7. All interns will be evaluated for performance and attendance on a regular basis.

A WHRO Television Production Intern would be exposed to and involved in camera and chryon operations, switcher and other control room operations, studio lighting, editing, and assisting directors as required.  WHRO/WHRV FM Radio interns would assist producers with music formats and selection of music from our library, scheduling of guests, handling listener inquiries, record keeping and production of tapes to fill orders.

Engineering Interns focus on either Operations or Maintenance.  Operations include audio, video, editing master control operations, and tape duplication.  Maintenance Interns would assist in maintaining such equipment as videotape machines, audio and video equipment, switchers and consoles, certain computer systems, and television transmission equipment.

Marketing and Communications Interns would deal with writing radio spots promoting TV programs, organizing/writing/sending news releases, working on special events, editing or proofing publications such as our program guide, and learning promotion scheduling.

Other areas where WHRO offers internships include programming, Development (fund raising), Videoconferencing, Electronic Graphics/Desktop Publishing, Business Management, and Instructional Television Services.

A more detailed description of, and application for, our Internship Program is available at the WHRO front desk.  You may also contact Sherby Wilks, WHRO Internship Coordinator, at (757) 889-9290.
