From the Headlines: Bridge to Nowhere?, DNC

We'll take a look at the top stories of the week including the latest on the proposed shut down of the Jordan Bridge.   Chesapeake city leaders have recommended closing the 80 year old span by the year's end.  And the Obama - Biden ticket is set.  We'll talk about the latest political happenings as the Democratic National Convention gets underway in Denver with NPR's political editor Ken Rudin.
 
 

Tuesday, August 26
Segment A: The "CSI" Effect

An Associated Press review of accredited forensic science programs in the United States found about 75 percent of graduates are women, an increase from about 64 percent in 2000.  What's drawing so many women to a career in the crime lab?  We'll talk about it today on HearSay.
 
Segment B: Amethyst Initiative
College presidents from about 100 of the nation's best-known universities are calling on lawmakers to consider lowering the drinking age from 21 to 18, saying current laws encourage binge drinking on campus.  We'll open up our phone lines to the voices of Hampton Roads and see what you think about this issue.

McCain’s Choice
Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty, Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman and former Pennsylvania Governor Tom Ridge are all on the radar as possible running mates for Republican Presidential nominee-in-waiting John McCain.  McCain is expected to name his choice on his 72nd birthday this weekend.  We’ll talk about what the various choices would mean for the Republican ticket and invite you to call in with your comments.

Our guest host Barbara Hamm Lee talks with Grammy Award winning singer-songwriter Janis
Ian, who recently published a memoir, 'Society's Child', recounting her forty-plus years in the music industry. We'll also bring you an interview with Daniel Levitin, whose new book, 'The World in Six Songs: How the Musical Brain Created Human Nature', explains his theory that every song can be placed in one of six categories: friendship, joy, comfort, knowledge, religion and love.
