From The Headlines: ORDER IN THE COURT, KEMBA SMITH
Throughout America's history, the independence of the judiciary has protected individual liberties and prevented a tyranny of the majority. Examples include extending voting rights, ending segregation, and protecting the average citizen from unwarranted government intrusion. This process is only possible if the court remains 'fair and impartial'. We'll talk about how this complex system works today on HearSay. We'll also hear the compelling story of Kemba Smith, who was a student at Hampton University when she became caught up in a drug ring run by her boyfriend. She was sentenced to 24 1/2 years in prison in 1994. She joins us to talk about her journey and her life today.

SO YOU WANT TO BE AN AUTHOR
On writing Joseph Pulitzer said, "Put it before them briefly so they will read it, clearly so they will appreciate it, picturesquely so they will remember it, and above all, accurately so they will be guided by its light." THE WAR
Ken Burns' film, The War, explores the most intimate human dimensions of the greatest cataclysm in history — a worldwide catastrophe that touched the lives of every family on every street in every town. When President Franklin Delano Roosevelt spoke of America’s involvement in the war effort, he described it as “one front and one battle where everyone in the United States – every man, woman and child – is in action. That front is right here at home, in our daily lives.” On a special edition of HearSay, we’ll look at the how times have changed in times of war with historian John Quarstein. We invite you to share your stories of life on the home front during World War II. Call in with your questions and comments, or send us an email at hearsay@whrv.org.
THE WAR on WHRO-TV 15 beginning Sunday, September 23rd (four nights the first week and three nights the second week) from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. (8:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. on three nights).
