Tuesday, August 21 Segment A: ‘No Shushing Required’ - THE MODERN LIBRARIAN As technology continues to evolve and change, so does the role of the modern librarian. Today’s librarians fill a number of roles for the communities they serve, often providing services as far ranging as tech support and raising funds in addition to their Dewey Decimal duties. We’ll talk about some of the challenges faced by our community libraries and the people who keep them going. We'll also talk about the myriad ways that modern librarians are shaking up the matronly stereotype and letting their hair down.
Segment B: WHAT'S BLACK, WHITE AND READ ALL OVER? We look at the decline in circulation for print newspapers and ask what that means for the future. We also talk to Wil LaVeist, editor of soon to be launched MIX magazine, whose target audience is the area’s minority population. We’ll ask him about the challenges of starting a new publication at a time when print media seems to be on the decline. Join us with your thoughts on the topic and let us know where you get your news these days.

Segment B: BORDER OF TRUTH The Quanza was a Portuguese steamship filled with Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi-occupied Europe. Due to improper visas, 86 of its passengers were denied entry to Vera Cruz, Mexico, and faced deportation back to their homelands. However, when the Quanza laid over here in Hampton Roads to refuel, it was held in port, and the fate of its refugees became the subject of an intense political and legal battle. In "The Border of Truth" author Victoria Redel explores the experience of first-generation children of refugees and the ways in which the stories of their parents define their lives. She'll talk with Cathy today about the book and how her father's own war time experience influenced her to write it.
