This week on HearSay with Cathy Lewis
August 6-9

Monday, August 6
FROM THE HEADLINES
We'll take a look at the top stories of the week, including a discussion on child abuse. The latest statistics indicate about 40 percent of Virginia's child abuse deaths occurred in Hampton Roads, even though only about 23 percent of the state's children live here.  A second national study just out presented a link between stress of deployment and increased risk of child abuse and neglect in military families.  We'll open our lines to the voices of Hampton Roads to hear what you have to say about this important issue.  Guests: Betty Wade Coyle - executive director of Prevent Child Abuse Hampton Roads; Dr. Michelle Clayton - forensic pediatrician with the child abuse program at CHKD; and Dr. Danielle Rentz - epidemic intelligence service officer with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

INVESTIGATING INFRASTRUCTURE
The collapse of the I-35W bridge in Minnesota has residents across the nation questioning the roads and bridges they use daily, and with good reason.  Overall, one-quarter of all bridges in the U.S. are considered structurally deficient.  With fast-rising costs of construction and the shrinking value of gasoline taxes perhaps the biggest challenge before lawmakers is how to finance improvements.   On today's HearSay, we'll talk about the ways we examine our infrastructure - such as roads, bridges, and drinking water systems.

Segment A: JOURNEY TO IRAN
Tom Palumbo, a local nurse affiliated with Norfolk Catholic Worker, Veterans for Peace and the Norfolk chapter of Amnesty International, recently traveled to the Middle East as part of a five-member delegation of U.S. citizens.  He joins Cathy to talk about their 12-day, 1,750-kilometer journey through the Islamic Republic of Iran on a quest to learn more about the country and its history, culture and beliefs.

Segment B: THE LOST BATTLE
It was the northernmost Confederate victory of the Civil War.  In "Desperate Engagement" author Marc Leepson tells the story of the Battle of Monocacy, which took place on the blisteringly hot day in July 1864, and is one of the Civil War’s most significant, yet little-known battles.  Leepson joins us today to talk about his latest work.

EDIBLE PURSUITS
Farm friendly, low fat, gourmet fish...just some of the buzz words that are part of current food trends.  Let's talk about the new and interesting fare food manufacturers are developing to meet the changing needs of consumers.  We'll also talk about the "slow food" movement which encourages people to eat local and give more thought to their food choices.
