Jonathan Lichtenstein

A graduate from Old Dominion University and alum of the university’s debatable, romanticized and elusive radio station, WODU, Jonathan Lichtenstein joined the announcing staff at WHRO in the fall of 2004. Having received a degree in music education from his alma mater, Jonathan uses radio as an outlet not only for his keen interest in music, but as justification for his fervent collection of records. Lp’s, like WHRO’s own extensive library, have provided him entree into a vast and labyrinthine index of composers, styles and instrumentation... to enjoy the intimacy of a room illuminated by the stroboscope’s dusky glow. However, it should not be assumed his life is completely consumed by these pursuits.

Jonathan is an active member of Tidewater’s vibrant community of musicians, and plays as Principal Bass Clarinetist in the Virginia Wind Symphony, having performed in exhibitions with the Philadelphia and American Brass Quintets, at the Midwest Clinic and VMEA Conference, under the tutelage of Dennis J. Zeisler and the late, Dr. Frederick Fennell. A native of Virginia Beach, he cultivated his love for radio through tapes and transcriptions of vintage network programs, stirring an interest not only in broadcasting, but the culture of the period. He is captivated by history and revels in uncovering the dusty exploits of any pioneer, gladly chipping rust from the most stagnant of stories.

As WHRO’s youngest announcer, Jonathan currently makes his home on the South-Side. He enjoys the pleasures of travel, whether by train, plane or automobile and hopes to one day sail aboard a barquentine or a renovated S.S. United States. Until such time, he may be found surrounded by his books and records, behind the lens of his 35mm camera, in the NARO’s balcony, or under the hood of his jalopy-of-the-moment.
