Hello, Members and Friends of WHRO!
The past few months have been busy ones at WHRO and WHRV, and starting in March, you’ll start to see and hear the fruits of our labors. We’re all very excited about the March 1st launch of our newest digital radio station – SpeakEasy. Many of you have told us that you’d like a fulltime talk station, with intelligent, thoughtful programming from National Public Radio and Public Radio International – SpeakEasy is our response to your requests. If you don’t own a digital radio, you’ll want one when you see the lineup of programs SpeakEasy is offering. And during our annual spring radio fundraiser, you’ll have the option to receive a digital radio as our gift of appreciation for your pledge. (In the meantime, you’ll be able to listen to SpeakEasy and any of our growing family of digital stations by logging on to whro.org!)
On March 9th, we’ll debut the third installment of Civil War in Hampton Roads. This series is a real labor of love for WHRO producer Cindy Pardy and writer/host John Quarstein, and the talented crew who have worked to bring history to life. Civil War buffs will be pleased to know that we’re already working on the next installment.
March 28th is the premiere of What Matters, a weekly public affairs television program with Cathy Lewis, known to WHRV listeners as the host of our daily call-in talk show, HearSay.
Finally, in January, WHRV 89.5FM aired Holocaust Voices, an hour-long program produced by Michelle Gabrielle-Harrell. Michelle interviewed five individuals from Hampton Roads who survived the Holocaust, giving them the opportunity to share their experiences with our listeners. It’s so critical to capture these stories while they can be told by those in our community who actually lived through the event. This material adds incalculable value to available written accounts. If you missed it, you can hear it again on May 1st at 1:00pm on WHRV 89.5FM.
Telling Hampton Roads’ own stories is part of WHRO’s mission to enrich life in this very rich community. We hope you’ll continue to let us know how we’re doing!
